Couple Adopts a Fearful, Toothless Dog and Makes It the Happiest Pup Ever

Maddie shares the touching journey of Toothless, a chihuahua she adopted from the Houston Humane Society, where she works. Toothless had a rough start, having been rescued from a filthy trailer crowded with 40 other dogs. Initially fearful and unaccustomed to human contact, he behaved like a feral dog. During his rescue, Toothless was so scared that he would freeze under a towel rather than show aggression.

Despite his challenging behavior, including avoiding touch and ‘gumming’ Maddie a few times (since he has no teeth), she decided to foster him. This decision came from her love for senior and ‘crusty’ dogs and a desire to give him a second chance at life. The first night at home was a breakthrough; Toothless allowed Maddie to hold him, and although unsure, he seemed to enjoy the affection.

His transformation became evident the next day when he started seeking out Maddie’s attention and wanted to be held. Toothless’s attachment to Maddie grew quickly, and he became protective of her. He expressed discomfort when the shelter director, who had initially captured him, came near, but his aggression was more out of fear and unfamiliarity than hostility.

Over time, Toothless not only bonded inseparably with Maddie but also with her other dog, Sunshine. He showed typical playful behaviors, enjoyed playing with toys, and often exhibited bursts of energy known as the ‘Zoomies.’ Despite his past hardships, including fighting for food which likely led to his toothlessness and wearing double layers due to always being cold, Toothless thrived in Maddie’s care. His story is a testament to the deep, appreciative bond that can develop between rescue animals and their new families, highlighting the profound love and gratitude they can offer.
