Deaf dog sounds like this when he tries to bark

Jennifer’s family was not looking to adopt a second dog, but fate had other plans. Two years ago, Jennifer’s mother, who works at a local shelter in Reinfeld, southern Germany, informed them about a deaf dog named Buddy who had been found wandering on the highway. The shelter staff quickly realized Buddy’s hearing impairment and feared this would hinder his chances of adoption, especially being a Dogo Argentino—a breed often stigmatized for being difficult.

Despite these challenges, Buddy’s charisma shone through a video the shelter sent Jennifer’s family, showing him playfully engaging with a toy. Overwhelmed by his endearing behavior, they decided to adopt him. Two weeks after seeing the video, Buddy was welcomed into their home.

Adapting to a New Home

Buddy’s initial days at his new home were not easy. For the first three nights, he screamed relentlessly in his crate. Jennifer and her family took turns sitting by him, holding his paws to comfort him and help him settle. They suspected that Buddy might have been part of a puppy mill and discarded when his deafness was discovered, reducing his value in the eyes of breeders.

In Germany, specific regulations apply to so-called “bully breeds.” Though Buddy didn’t require a muzzle under List Number Two of the regulations, any behavioral issues could necessitate further testing. Buddy’s deafness made his integration into the family particularly challenging, yet fascinating, as everything from watching TV to everyday household noises seemed novel to him.

A Bond of Unspoken Love

Over time, Buddy adjusted beautifully. His other senses, particularly sight, became highly attuned. He could detect subtle changes in the environment, like someone getting coffee or opening a door, by changes in air pressure. His need for reassurance meant he sought constant physical contact, finding comfort in sleeping under the covers next to Jennifer.

Buddy learned to respond to hand signals, and despite his inability to hear, Jennifer often spoke to him, using her voice and hands to communicate. This experience taught the family profound lessons about patience, communication, and the depth of love a dog can offer. Buddy’s presence became a source of emotional support, sensing and comforting Jennifer during her down times.

In their journey with Buddy, Jennifer and her family learned the vast capacity for love and adaptation that dogs possess, especially those like Buddy who face greater challenges in life. They hope that Buddy feels the same deep affection and security that he brings into their lives every day.
