Deaf dog sweetly hugs woman who adopted him

Crystal and her family adopted Hogan, a deaf and visually impaired Great Dane, after he was surrendered by a breeder due to his conditions. They were contacted by a Great Dane rescue organization and decided to give Hogan a loving home. For Crystal, it was love at first sight, and she was determined to ensure Hogan experienced the fullest life possible, despite his disabilities.

Hogan’s journey with his new family revealed more challenges as they discovered his visual impairment over time. They noticed he had major light sensitivity and struggled with depth perception, often bumping into parked cars and falling off curbs. To help him navigate the world, they even outfitted him with special doggles to protect his eyes from sunlight.

In their efforts to communicate with Hogan, Crystal and her family employed various methods, including sign language and a vibrating collar for commands. They adapted sign language to suit Hogan’s needs, emphasizing large gestures due to his visual impairment. Despite the challenges, Hogan learned commands like sit, stay, come, and paw, showcasing his intelligence and eagerness to please.

Despite his disabilities, Hogan remained a happy and affectionate dog, always seeking closeness and cuddles with his family. Crystal noted his intuitive nature, often providing comfort when she needed it most. Hogan’s presence brought immense joy and enrichment to their lives, despite the extra care he required.

Crystal and her family felt grateful for the opportunity to adopt Hogan, recognizing him as a unique soul who brought light and happiness into their home. Their story highlights the profound bond between humans and animals and the transformative power of love and compassion.
