Dog with unique face and smart traits adopted into a loving family

Leo Neal tells the heartwarming tale of Belle, a dog with a distinct appearance and charming personality, adopted from the Humane Society. On a visit intended merely as a birthday outing for Leo’s husband, they encountered Belle, a dog with no known background and approximately 12 weeks old. Her immediate connection with the Neals through her eager greeting and unique face—which resembled a child’s drawing of a dog—made it clear she was destined to join their family. Her quirky attributes, such as one ear that prefers to stand upright and her human-like eyes, add to her endearing nature.

Belle’s Health and Intelligence

Belle’s peculiar eyes are attributed to a difficult birth, specifically being stuck in the birth canal, which stretched her facial features. Despite this, her health is stable, confirmed by various tests including a vision test and a wisdom panel, revealing her to be a mix of Doberman Pinscher, cattle dog, and hound. Belle demonstrates remarkable intelligence in everyday activities. For instance, she has self-taught herself to use a door stopper to signal when she wants to go outside, a tool she uses effectively even at night to wake Leo.

Family Life and Weight Management

Living close to a fire station, Belle responds to sirens with her own “siren” sound, showcasing her vocal abilities. Her life with the Neals, now including two young children, has led to some weight gain due to the extra treats from the kids. The family is actively working on managing her diet to help her lose the extra weight, about seven pounds. Belle’s communicative nature and strong bond with the family—particularly with Leo, who she regularly “converses” with—illustrate the profound connection she has with her human companions. The Neals cherish Belle deeply, grateful for her presence in their lives and the joy she brings to their home.
