I Adopted Pit bull No One Else Wanted. Here’s How That Went

Mark’s journey with Dexter, a pitbull no one else wanted, began in a bleak shelter where Dexter, a large tan dog without even a name, sat despondent and unnoticed. His situation was dire; without any adoption interest, he was placed on the euthanasia list. In 2019, Dexter was rescued from the streets of Georgia where he had been surviving, underweight by 20 to 25 pounds and suffering from fur loss due to fleas and sun damage.

Despite the grim odds facing bully breeds in southern U.S. shelters, Dexter’s fortune changed when Fly With Me Animal Rescue from Halifax, Nova Scotia, intervened. After a long two-day journey from Georgia to Canada, Dexter immediately showed immense affection and joy upon meeting Mark, showering him with kisses and hugs, which indicated his readiness to adapt quickly to a new loving home.

In 2022, the family grew with the addition of a 12-week-old kitten named Zoe, with whom Dexter formed an incredibly gentle and close bond, often found cuddling and napping together. Contrary to Mark’s initial rule of no dogs on the couch or bed, Dexter quickly became a comforting presence in every space of their home, even sleeping between Mark and his fiancée every night.

Dexter also had a habit of bringing “gifts” to his owners, such as toys or socks, showing his affection and loyalty. Despite facing occasional prejudice due to his breed, Dexter’s gentle nature won over many hearts, compelling Mark to start “East Coast Bully Advocates,” a group dedicated to saving the lives of many rescue dogs.

The bond between Mark and Dexter grew especially strong after Mark was diagnosed with lupus and experienced a severe deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Dexter proved to be more than just a pet; he was a crucial support in Mark’s mental health journey, intuitively providing comfort during stressful or anxious moments.

Dexter’s presence encouraged Mark to slow down from his hectic lifestyle, highlighting the importance of appreciating life’s simpler, quieter moments. Through all life’s challenges, Dexter remained a constant source of joy and resilience, truly exemplifying the profound impact of rescuing a dog.
