Woman was advised not to help this dog because he’s a pit bull

Molly stumbled upon a pit bull named Polo abandoned by a highway in Alabama, sparking an unforeseen rescue journey filled with compassion and challenges.

Molly, while driving through Alabama, noticed a pit bull by the roadside. Despite warnings from passersby not to approach the dog due to his breed, she couldn’t resist helping. Intuitively, she used a gum pack to lure Polo, who eagerly approached her and showered her with affection. Upon closer inspection, Polo was in poor condition, sporting a collar that was too tight, and his coat was unhealthy. Conversations with local animal control and shelter personnel suggested that Polo had likely been intentionally abandoned.

Determined to save him, Molly promised Polo a safe future. The process of adopting him was complicated by their geographical distance—Polo was in Alabama, and Molly lived in Massachusetts. This required a month-long coordination of veterinary care, including neutering and vaccinations, and arranging transport for Polo.

Upon arrival, Polo integrated into Molly’s family, which already included four other rescue dogs. He was initially thin and lacked training; he didn’t even know how to use stairs or that he wasn’t supposed to relieve himself indoors. Nevertheless, Polo was incredibly sociable and loving towards everyone he met, forming an especially close bond with Molly’s father and frequently spending time with Molly’s elderly grandmother in a memory care unit.

Over time, with proper care and nutrition, Polo’s health improved significantly. He learned to live harmoniously with his new family, showing particular tact and gentleness with the other dogs by making himself appear smaller during their first meeting to avoid intimidating them. Polo thrived in his new environment, waking up each day with an infectious enthusiasm for life.
