In September of the previous year, Aussie began to limp, prompting Taylor to visit the vet. After some initial tests, the vet returned with distressing news: Aussie had osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. The diagnosis was a heavy blow. Taylor and her husband were presented with several treatment options: pain management with a life expectancy of about two months, limb amputation with a life expectancy of four to six months without chemotherapy, or amputation followed by chemotherapy with a life expectancy of nine to twelve months. They chose the latter for Aussie, hoping to give him a fighting chance at a longer life. The surgery took place immediately on October 4th, and Aussie, showing his resilient spirit, was already walking and in good spirits post-operation.
Triumphs and Trials
The subsequent months were a rollercoaster of emotions and challenges. Aussie underwent chemotherapy, which was tough on him, but he recovered quickly after each session. His days post-chemo were filled with vigor, illustrating his undying resilience and zest for life. Taylor’s father, who had also battled cancer, found a special bond with Aussie, often sending him ice cream via UberEats to cheer him up after treatments.
Aussie’s companion at home, a hyper and playful dog, became gentler with him, understanding his physical limitations. Taylor and her husband made adjustments to their lives to accommodate Aussie’s needs, including sleeping on the floor to avoid stairs and exploring mobility aids to help him enjoy his favorite activities like going to the beach and kayaking.
